Ireland West Airport Knock – Runway Resurfacing Works

The main runway at Knock Airport was officially opened in 1986. In May 2016, a structural evaluation of the existing pavement condition concluded that a major upgrade of the asset was essential to future proof for the next generation of airport operations.
During the procurement process, Clare Civil and Lagan Aviation were selected as Knock Airports ECI partner. Once selected, we worked collaboratively with the client to enhance the original scope to bring additional technical, budgetary and buildability value in advance of the physical works proceeding.
This project comprised the removal of existing runway porous friction course and replacing with a new binder and surface course (30,000T’s). The final runway surface was grooved to enhance its friction characteristics during wet take-off and landing operations.
All civil works were undertaken during night-time possessions to minimise any negative impacts on the airports ongoing operations.
